Kayak Pool Session: Performance Task Lesson (2 hours)
This lesson plan utilizes a pool environment to introduce basic kayaking skills through a performance task.
Target Audience: This lesson is designed for beginners with no prior kayaking experience.
Learning Objectives:
- Students will be able to identify the parts of a kayak and their functions. (Knowledge)
- Students will be able to demonstrate proper kayak entry and exit procedures in shallow water. (Skills)
- Students will be able to perform basic paddle strokes (forward, reverse, and turning) while maintaining balance. (Skills)
- Students will be able to work collaboratively with a partner to safely navigate a designated course in a pool. (Application)
Materials:

- Instructors should be CPR/First-Aid certified and familiar with pool safety protocols.
- Maintain a safe student-to-instructor ratio (ideally 4:1).
Lesson Procedure (120 minutes):
Introduction (20 minutes):
- Welcome and introductions: Briefly introduce yourselves and the lesson objectives.
- Pool safety discussion: Review pool rules and emphasize the importance of wearing PFDs.

- Instructor feedback: Provide constructive feedback to each team after course completion.
Wrap-up and Assessment (20 minutes):
- Group discussion: Facilitate a discussion about the learning experience. Ask students to share challenges and successes.
- Assessment: Use a simple checklist or rubric to assess student performance on key skills like proper entry/exit, basic strokes, and teamwork during course navigation.
Differentiation:
- Physical limitations: Provide alternative paddling techniques or equipment for students with physical limitations.
- Fear of water: Offer additional support and encouragement to students apprehensive about the water. Consider starting with basic water familiarization exercises.
Extension Activities (Optional):
- Show students a short video on proper kayaking techniques in a lake or river environment.
- Have students research different types of kayaks and their uses.
- Invite a guest speaker to discuss kayaking safety and etiquette on open water.
Safety Note:
This lesson plan is designed for a controlled pool environment. Open water kayaking requires additional safety considerations, including proper instruction, appropriate weather conditions, and adherence to all water safety guidelines.
