Kayak Pool Session

Kayak Pool Session: Performance Task Lesson (2 hours)

This lesson plan utilizes a pool environment to introduce basic kayaking skills through a performance task.

Target Audience: This lesson is designed for beginners with no prior kayaking experience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify the parts of a kayak and their functions. (Knowledge)
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proper kayak entry and exit procedures in shallow water. (Skills)
  • Students will be able to perform basic paddle strokes (forward, reverse, and turning) while maintaining balance. (Skills)
  • Students will be able to work collaboratively with a partner to safely navigate a designated course in a pool. (Application)

Materials:

  • Kayaks (one per student or pair)
  • Paddles (one per student or pair)
  • Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) for each student
  • Pool with a designated course marked by cones or pool noodles
  • Whistles for instructors
  • First-aid kit

Safety:

  • All participants must wear properly fitted PFDs throughout the lesson.
  • Instructors should be CPR/First-Aid certified and familiar with pool safety protocols.
  • Maintain a safe student-to-instructor ratio (ideally 4:1).

Lesson Procedure (120 minutes):

Introduction (20 minutes):

  1. Welcome and introductions: Briefly introduce yourselves and the lesson objectives.
  2. Pool safety discussion: Review pool rules and emphasize the importance of wearing PFDs.
  3. Kayak anatomy: Identify the different parts of a kayak and explain their functions (cockpit, seat, deck, gunwales, etc.)

Demonstration (20 minutes):

  1. On land: Demonstrate proper kayak entry and exit techniques, emphasizing balance and safety.
  2. In shallow water: Demonstrate basic paddle strokes – forward, reverse, and turning – while maintaining good posture and balance.
  3. Course navigation: Briefly demonstrate navigating a simple course marked by cones or pool noodles.

Performance Task (60 minutes):

  1. Group Formation: Divide students into pairs.
  2. Practice basic skills: Allow students to practice entering and exiting kayaks, basic paddle strokes, and maneuvering in shallow water with instructor supervision.
  3. Course Navigation: Students navigate the designated course as a team, following instructor guidance. Encourage communication and collaboration between partners.
  4. Instructor feedback: Provide constructive feedback to each team after course completion.

Wrap-up and Assessment (20 minutes):

  1. Group discussion: Facilitate a discussion about the learning experience. Ask students to share challenges and successes.
  2. Assessment: Use a simple checklist or rubric to assess student performance on key skills like proper entry/exit, basic strokes, and teamwork during course navigation.

Differentiation:

  • Physical limitations: Provide alternative paddling techniques or equipment for students with physical limitations.
  • Fear of water: Offer additional support and encouragement to students apprehensive about the water. Consider starting with basic water familiarization exercises.

Extension Activities (Optional):

  • Show students a short video on proper kayaking techniques in a lake or river environment.
  • Have students research different types of kayaks and their uses.
  • Invite a guest speaker to discuss kayaking safety and etiquette on open water.

Safety Note:

This lesson plan is designed for a controlled pool environment. Open water kayaking requires additional safety considerations, including proper instruction, appropriate weather conditions, and adherence to all water safety guidelines.
