Activity Setup (10 minutes):

  1. Gather the Players: Briefly explain the game and its objectives, emphasizing teamwork and safety.
  2. Team Up: Divide students into equal teams and assign them starting positions at opposite ends of the pool.
  3. Blindfolded Buddies: Within each team, blindfold half the students (the "Marco" players). Their teammates (the "Polo" players) will hold pool noodles.

Marco Polo Relay Race (20 minutes):

  1. On Your Mark, Get Set... Explain that the "Polo" players will stay at the starting point while the blindfolded "Marco" players enter the water and tread water in the middle of the pool.
  2. Marco! At the signal, the blindfolded "Marco" players yell "Marco!" The "Polo" players yell "Polo!" in response.
  3. Guiding the Way: The "Polo" players guide their blindfolded teammates by voice, directing them towards the sound of their voices. Encourage clear and concise communication.
  4. Tag and Swim: Once the "Marco" player reaches their "Polo" teammate, they tag them by touching their shoulder. The "Polo" player then swims back to the starting point, holding the pool noodle high above the water to mark the finish line.
  5. Relay Repeat: The tagged "Polo" player blindfolds themself and becomes the new "Marco" player. The race continues until all team members have participated in both roles.

  • Team Spirit: Encourage team cheers and chants to add to the excitement of the relay race.
