Sufer Lesson 5: Zen and the Art of Glide - Mastering Trim and Noseriding

This performance task helps your Surfer students achieve a state of flow by mastering the art of trim and noseriding. Through a combination of visualization exercises, balance challenges, and practical application, they will develop the skills and focus needed to glide effortlessly across the wave's surface.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to explain the concepts of trim and noseriding in surfing. (Knowledge)
  • Students will be able to visualize and describe the ideal body position for trimming and noseriding. (Visualization)
  • Students will be able to demonstrate balance and control techniques essential for trimming and noseriding on land. (Performance)
  • Students will be able to practice and refine basic trim and noseriding movements on the surfboard in a safe environment. (Performance)

Materials:

  • Whiteboard or projector
  • Markers or pens
  • Surfboards (enough for each student, or pool noodles for younger students)
  • Open space (indoors or outdoors) with enough room for students to move safely with their boards
  • Optional: Balance board or wobble cushion

Activity (120 minutes):

Introduction and Visualization (20 minutes):

  1. Gliding into Zen: Begin by introducing the concepts of trim and noseriding. Explain how trim involves finding the sweet spot on the wave for effortless gliding, while noseriding is the art of balancing on the nose of the surfboard while maintaining trim.
  2. The Mind's Eye: Guide students through a visualization exercise. Ask them to close their eyes and imagine themselves riding a smooth wave, finding perfect trim, and achieving balance for a successful noseride. Encourage them to describe their body position and the feeling of gliding effortlessly.

Balance Challenges (30 minutes):

  1. Finding Your Center: Balance is key for trim and noseriding. Start with static balance challenges. Students can practice standing on one leg for extended periods, focusing on core engagement and posture.
  2. Wobble Board Wizardry (Optional): If available, incorporate balance challenges on a balance board or wobble cushion. This will further challenge their core stability and proprioception (body awareness).
  3. Partner Practice: Students can work in pairs, taking turns gently pushing each other off balance while they practice maintaining their center.

Trim Techniques on Land (20 minutes):

  1. Land Ahoy!: Transition from balance challenges to practicing trim body position on land. Students assume a surfer's stance with knees slightly bent, core engaged, and arms extended low in front for balance.
  2. Fine-tuning the Feel: Have students practice subtle weight shifts and adjustments to their body position, simulating how they would maintain trim while gliding on a wave.

Trim and Noseride Drills on Surfboard (30 minutes):

  1. Safe Progression: Move the practice to the surfboards in a safe shallow water environment. Students can start by paddling on their knees and practicing finding a comfortable, balanced trim position.
  2. Standing Tall: For students comfortable kneeling, encourage them to transition to a standing position and focus on maintaining trim while keeping their eyes focused on a fixed point ahead.
  3. Noseriding Intro: Once students can comfortably trim for short distances, introduce the concept of noseriding. Begin by having them practice slowly walking a few steps towards the nose of the board while maintaining trim.

Putting it Together: The Glide Challenge (20 minutes):

  1. Challenge Time!: Set up a short challenge course in the shallow water. Students will attempt to paddle onto their boards, find trim, and noseride for a short distance before dismounting.
  2. Focus and Flow: Encourage students to focus on their visualization exercises and balance techniques as they attempt the challenge.

Wrap-up and Reflection (10 minutes):

  1. Celebrating the Glide: Discuss the importance of trim and noseriding for smooth, stylish, and efficient wave riding. Celebrate the students' efforts and progress in achieving a state of flow on the wave.
  2. Keeping the Stoke Alive: Emphasize the importance of continued practice for mastering trim and noseriding. Encourage students to visualize these techniques and practice them in safe water conditions outside of class.

Differentiation:

  • Younger students can focus on practicing balance challenges and basic trim positions on land or while kneeling on the surfboard.
  • Beginners can skip the noseriding aspect of the challenge and focus on maintaining trim for short distances.
  • Advanced students can work on refining their noseriding technique and incorporating micro-adjustments for extended rides.
