Aquatic Adventure: Foundational Skills for Swimming (1.5 hours)

This fun and engaging activity introduces participants to the essential building blocks of swimming: body position, breathing control, and basic propulsion.

Target Audience: This activity is designed for beginners with no prior swimming experience, or those wanting to refine their foundational skills.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to comfortably enter and exit the shallow end of a pool. (Skills)
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proper body position in the water for buoyancy. (Skills)
  • Students will be able to exhale underwater and hold their breath for short periods. (Skills)
  • Students will be able to propel themselves through the water using basic kicking techniques. (Skills)

Materials:

  • Pool with shallow and deep ends (gradually increasing depth is ideal)
  • Pool noodles (one per student)
  • Kickboards (one per student, optional)
  • Fun, brightly colored diving rings or pool toys (optional)

Safety:

  • All participants must wear properly fitted life jackets throughout the activity.
  • Instructors should be CPR/First-Aid certified and familiar with pool safety protocols.
  • Maintain a safe student-to-instructor ratio (ideally 4:1).
  • Instruct participants to stay hydrated and take breaks as needed.

Lesson Procedure (90 minutes):

Warm-up and Water Comfort (20 minutes):

  1. Welcome and Introductions: Briefly introduce yourselves and the activity's objectives.
  2. Getting Used to the Water: Allow participants to enter the shallow end of the pool gradually, getting comfortable with the feel of the water on their skin.
  3. Walking on Water (Almost!): Have participants walk on the bottom of the pool, getting used to the buoyancy and feeling of being submerged.
  4. Fun with Noodles: Provide pool noodles for participants to hold onto while floating on their backs and stomachs, promoting relaxation and body position awareness.

Body Position and Breath Control (30 minutes):

  1. Starfish Stretch: Instruct participants to stand shoulder-depth in the water and practice stretching their arms and legs out like a starfish, emphasizing a straight body position.
  2. Blow Bubbles: Encourage participants to blow bubbles underwater while holding onto the pool wall, practicing exhaling comfortably and holding their breath for short periods.
  3. Bobbing for Apples (Pool Edition): Scatter diving rings or pool toys at the bottom of the shallow end. Participants bob for the objects while holding their breath and maintaining a streamlined body position.

Basic Propulsion (40 minutes):

  1. Kickboard Fun: Introduce kickboards and demonstrate basic kicking techniques (flutter kick and scissor kick) while holding onto the kickboard in a horizontal position. Participants practice kicking with a straight body and relaxed upper body.
  2. Kicking Drills: Without the kickboard, participants practice kicking on their fronts and backs, focusing on proper leg movement and maintaining a streamlined body position.
  3. Gliding Games: Encourage participants to push off the wall and glide underwater for short distances, focusing on holding their breath and maintaining a streamlined body position. Introduce fun challenges like seeing who can glide the farthest.

Wrap-up and Cool-Down (10 minutes):

  1. Group Discussion: Facilitate a discussion about the learning experience. Ask participants to share their thoughts and feelings about being in the water and their progress with foundational skills.
  2. Cool-Down Stretches: Lead participants through gentle stretches on the pool deck to cool down and improve flexibility.
  3. Next Steps: Encourage participants to continue practicing their foundational skills and explore learning basic swimming strokes.

Differentiation:

  • For participants with a fear of water, provide additional support and encouragement during the initial acclimation phase. Offer them the option to hold onto the instructor or the pool wall for extra security.
  • For more advanced participants, challenge them to practice streamlined body position while kicking with their eyes closed.

This fun and engaging activity creates a positive and supportive environment for beginners to build confidence and develop the foundational skills necessary for swimming.
