This engaging activity introduces essential skills for beginning swimmers in a fun and interactive way.
Target Audience: This activity is designed for children or adults with no prior swimming experience, or those uncomfortable in the water.
Learning Objectives:
- Students will be able to comfortably enter and exit the shallow end of a pool. (Skills)
- Students will be able to demonstrate basic breath control techniques while submerged in the water. (Skills)
- Students will be able to practice basic body position and floating techniques in shallow water. (Skills)
- Students will be able to experience the feeling of propulsion through basic leg movements in the water. (Skills)
Materials:
- Pool with shallow and deep ends (gradually increasing depth is ideal)
- Pool noodles (one per student)
- Kickboards (one per student, optional)
- Colorful underwater rings or toys (optional)
Safety:
- Ensure an adult lifeguard or qualified instructor is present at all times.
- Maintain a safe student-to-instructor ratio (ideally 4:1).
- Instruct participants to stay within their comfort zones and avoid pushing their limits.
Activity Procedure (60 minutes):
Welcome and Warm-up (10 minutes):
- Introductions and Icebreaker: Briefly introduce yourselves and the activity's objectives. Play a simple icebreaker game on poolside to build rapport with participants.
- Poolside Stretches: Lead participants through gentle stretches to prepare their muscles for movement in the water.
Getting Comfortable (20 minutes):
- Dipping In: Gradually introduce participants to the water by first dipping their toes, then ankles, and eventually lowering themselves to waist depth.
- Blowing Bubbles: In shallow water, have participants practice blowing bubbles underwater to become comfortable with submerging their faces and exhaling underwater.
- Wall Holds: Instruct participants to hold onto the pool wall and practice kicking their legs while keeping their bodies upright. This introduces the feeling of propulsion.
- Starfish Time: Demonstrate floating on the back with arms and legs outstretched like a starfish. Participants practice floating with support from the instructor or by holding onto the pool wall initially.
Exploring Movement (20 minutes):
- Pool Noodle Pals: Provide each participant with a pool noodle for added buoyancy. Encourage them to hold onto the noodle while practicing kicking their legs and gliding in the water.
- Kickboard Fun: (Optional) Introduce kickboards for participants who feel comfortable. Instruct them to hold onto the kickboard and practice kicking their legs in a flutter kick motion while floating on their front.
- Treasure Hunt: (Optional) Scatter colorful underwater rings or toys on the pool floor in the shallow end. Students can practice submerging their faces to retrieve the objects, working on breath control and comfort underwater.
Wrap-up and Celebration (10 minutes):
- Group Discussion: Facilitate a brief discussion about the experience. Ask participants to share their favorite activities and what they learned about being in the water.
- High Fives and Encouragement: Celebrate everyone's progress and effort. Encourage them to continue practicing these foundational skills for confident swimming.
Differentiation:
- For participants who are very apprehensive, allow them to take their time entering the water and focus on acclimation activities.
- For participants who are more comfortable, offer additional challenges like practicing basic arm movements while kicking or attempting short glides without the pool noodle.
Safety Note:
This activity is intended for a controlled pool environment with qualified supervision. It is not a substitute for formal swimming lessons. Always prioritize safety and adjust activities based on participant comfort levels.
