Cast a Line: Learn to Fish Workshop (3 hours)

This workshop utilizes a performance task approach to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge to enjoy the rewarding hobby of fishing.

Target Audience: This workshop is designed for beginners with no prior fishing experience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify the basic components of a fishing rod and reel setup. (Knowledge)
  • Students will be able to demonstrate safe and responsible handling of fishing equipment. (Skills)
  • Students will be able to tie a basic fishing knot (e.g., palomar knot) to secure bait or a lure. (Skills)
  • Students will be able to cast a fishing line with proper technique and minimal snags. (Skills)
  • Students will be able to identify and practice ethical catch and release techniques. (Knowledge & Application)

Materials:

  • Fishing rods and reels (one per participant) with pre-spooled fishing line (appropriate for the target fish species)
  • Hooks (appropriate size)
  • Sinkers
  • Bobbers (optional)
  • Fishing bait (live bait or lures)
  • Buckets for bait and fish (optional, depending on local regulations)
  • Pliers (for removing hooks)
  • Net (optional, for landing larger fish)
  • Knee or chest waders (optional, depending on location)
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • First-aid kit
  • Handouts with diagrams of fishing knots and ethical catch and release practices

  3. Casting Clinic: Demonstrate proper casting technique in a safe, open area. This includes holding the rod, releasing the line with the reel, and guiding the cast with a flick of the wrist. Participants practice casting under supervision.
  4. Safety First: Reiterate safe casting techniques and responsible handling of fishing hooks.

Performance Task (30 minutes):

  1. Fishing Location: Choose a safe and accessible fishing spot at the workshop location, considering local regulations and water conditions.
  2. Putting it into Practice: Participants put their newly acquired skills to the test by casting their lines and attempting to catch fish. Instructors provide guidance and support.
  3. Catch and Release: Discuss the importance of identifying target fish species and following catch and release techniques (if applicable) for specific species. Participants practice proper handling and release of fish.

Wrap-up and Assessment (30 minutes):

  1. Group Discussion: Facilitate a discussion about the workshop experience. Ask participants to share their successes, challenges, and newfound knowledge about fishing.
  2. Performance Task Assessment: Use a simple checklist or rubric to assess student performance on key aspects like safe equipment handling, knot tying, casting technique, and responsible fishing practices.
