Sufer Lesson 10: Safety First, Respect Always - A Surfer's Code


This performance task equips your Surfer students with the knowledge and values needed to prioritize safety, respect the ocean, and embrace proper surf etiquette. Through interactive discussions, scenario role-playing, and creative presentations, they will develop a deep understanding of their responsibility as surfers in the water.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify and explain essential ocean safety practices for surfers. (Knowledge)
  • Students will be able to analyze real-world scenarios and make decisions that prioritize safety in the water. (Analysis & Decision Making)
  • Students will be able to participate in role-playing activities that demonstrate proper surf etiquette. (Performance & Communication)
  • Students will be able to create a presentation, poster, or public service announcement (PSA) promoting safety, respect for the ocean, and surf etiquette. (Creativity & Communication)

Materials:

  • Whiteboard or projector
  • Markers or pens
  • Pictures or videos of ocean safety hazards and proper surf etiquette
  • Open space (indoors) with enough room for students to move safely
  • Optional: Props for role-playing (surf hats, towels)

Activity (120 minutes):

Introduction: A Surfer's Responsibility (20 minutes):

  1. Safety First!: Begin by emphasizing the importance of safety as the top priority for every surfer. Discuss the power and potential dangers of the ocean.
  2. Ocean Awareness: Introduce essential ocean safety practices like:
    • Understanding rip currents and how to escape them.
    • Knowing your limits and surfing within your skill level.
    • Being aware of weather conditions and hazards.
    • Importance of proper supervision and lifeguards.

Scenario Role-Playing (30 minutes):

  1. Safety in Action!: Divide the class into small groups and present real-world scenarios that surfers might encounter.
  2. Making the Right Call: Scenarios can involve:
    • A friend wants to surf in dangerous conditions.
    • A crowded lineup with surfers not following right of way.
    • Spotting someone caught in a rip current.
  3. Role-Playing It Out: Students role-play the scenarios, discussing and demonstrating the safest and most respectful way to handle each situation.
  4. Group Discussion: After each role-play, have a group discussion to analyze the decisions made and emphasize the importance of prioritizing safety and communication.

Respecting the Ocean and Others (20 minutes):

  1. The Surfer's Code: Discuss the concept of surf etiquette, the unwritten rules that ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone in the water.
  2. Respectful Reminders: Highlight key aspects of surf etiquette, such as:
    • Paddling out peacefully and respecting the right of way.
    • Sharing waves and not dropping in on others.
    • Communicating and maintaining awareness of other surfers.
    • Leaving the beach cleaner than you found it.

Creative Advocacy (30 minutes):

  1. Spreading the Stoke!: Students will create a presentation, poster, or public service announcement (PSA) promoting safety, respect for the ocean, and surf etiquette.
  2. Choose Your Medium:
    • Presentation: Students create a presentation targeted towards new surfers, emphasizing essential safety practices and surf etiquette guidelines.
    • Poster: Students design a visually appealing poster highlighting key safety reminders and respectful behavior in the water.
    • PSA (Optional): For advanced students, create a short PSA video promoting responsible surfing practices using role-playing or animation.

Wrap-up and Reflection (20 minutes):

  1. Sharing Your Message: Students present their creative projects to the class, explaining their message and its importance for surfer safety and a healthy ocean environment.
  2. A Lifelong Commitment: Discuss the importance of internalizing these values and becoming ambassadors for safe and respectful surfing practices.

Differentiation:

  • Younger students can participate in simplified role-playing scenarios with clear right and wrong choices.
  • Beginners can create a collage using pictures or drawings that represent safe and respectful surfing behavior.
  • Advanced students can research and present on specific ocean conservation efforts relevant to surfers.
