Sufer Lesson 9: Riding the Wave to Victory - Competition Surfing and the Power of Practice

This performance task gets your students stoked about the competitive side of surfing while emphasizing the importance of practice. Through interactive discussions, simulations, and creative presentations, they will explore the world of competition surfing and discover how dedication and practice pave the way for success.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to explain the basic format and judging criteria of professional surfing competitions. (Knowledge)
  • Students will be able to identify the skills and strategies essential for success in competitive surfing. (Analysis)
  • Students will be able to participate in a simulation activity replicating the pressure and decision-making of competitive surfing. (Performance & Communication)
  • Students will be able to create a presentation or visual representation highlighting the importance of practice for becoming a champion surfer. (Creativity & Communication)

Materials:

  • Whiteboard or projector
  • Markers or pens
  • Pictures or videos of professional surfing competitions
  • Open space (indoors) with enough room for students to move safely
  • Optional: Surfboards (enough for a small group), beach balls, cones

Activity (120 minutes):

Introduction: Champions on the Stage (20 minutes):

  1. Groms to Champions: Begin by discussing the world of professional surfing, showcasing the excitement and athleticism of competition surfing.
  2. Competition Breakdown: Explain the basic format of surfing competitions (heats, waves per heat, judging criteria). Discuss factors like wave selection, maneuver variety, and wave completion that surfers are judged on.

Skills and Strategies (20 minutes):

  1. The Winning Formula: Discuss the skills and strategies needed for success in competition surfing. This can include:
    • Technical Skills: Mastering maneuvers like bottom turns, cutbacks, and aerials.
    • Wave Selection: Picking the best waves for scoring opportunities.
    • Heat Strategy: Adapting your approach based on competitors and wave conditions.
    • Mental Toughness: Performing under pressure and maintaining focus.

Competition Simulation (30 minutes):

  1. Feel the Pressure!: Divide the class into small groups and set up a simulated competition scenario.
  2. Limited Waves: Use beach balls or other objects to represent incoming waves with varying sizes and scoring potential. Students take turns paddling towards the "waves" (objects) and making decisions about which wave to ride.
  3. Decision Time: Encourage discussion within the groups as students strategize about wave selection, considering factors like size, difficulty, and potential scoring.
  4. Simulating Judging: After each round, have students discuss their wave selection and maneuvers, simulating the judging process and highlighting areas for improvement.

The Power of Practice (20 minutes):

  1. Practice Makes Progress: Discuss the importance of dedicated practice for becoming a champion surfer. Emphasize how consistent practice refines skills, builds confidence, and prepares surfers for the demands of competition.
  2. Practice Makes Perfect Presentations: Students will create a presentation or visual representation highlighting the importance of practice for becoming a champion surfer. This can be:
    • Presentation: Students create a short presentation with pictures, videos, or personal anecdotes that showcase the dedication and practice routines of famous surfers.
    • Visual Representation: Students create a poster or drawing depicting a surfer diligently practicing maneuvers, emphasizing the connection between practice and success.

Wrap-up and Reflection (10 minutes):

  1. The Journey to Victory: Discuss the dedication and commitment required to reach the top levels of competitive surfing.
  2. Keeping the Stoke Alive: Emphasize that the journey to becoming a champion is a marathon, not a sprint. Encourage students to find joy in the practice process and celebrate their progress along the way.

Differentiation:

  • Younger students can participate in a simplified competition simulation using basic wave selection strategies.
  • Beginners can create a simple drawing of a surfer practicing a specific maneuver.
  • Advanced students can research and present on the training routines of specific professional surfers.

Remember:

This lesson aims to inspire students about the competitive side of surfing while emphasizing the importance of dedication and practice. It is not intended to replace the focus on safe and responsible surfing practices.
