This performance task in your Surfer lesson gets students moving and engaged as they work on perfecting their pop-up, balance, and board control skills. Through a series of challenges and creative expression, students will gain confidence and essential skills for catching those waves!
Learning Objectives:
- Students will be able to demonstrate a proper pop-up technique from a prone position on the surfboard. (Performance)
- Students will be able to maintain balance and control while stationary on the surfboard. (Performance)
- Students will be able to creatively showcase their balance and control skills on the surfboard. (Creativity & Communication)
- Students will be able to provide constructive feedback to their peers. (Communication)
Materials:
- Surfboards (enough for each student, or pool noodles for younger students)
- Open space (indoors or outdoors) with enough room for students to move safely with their boards
- Markers, crayons, or construction paper (optional)
Activity (90 minutes):
Warm-up and Pop-Up Practice (20 minutes):
- Land Ahoy!: Begin with a brief review of proper pop-up technique on land. Demonstrate the steps: paddling in prone position, hand placement, core engagement, and popping up to a balanced stance.
- Practice Makes Perfect: Have students practice their pop-up technique on their surfboards on land. Encourage them to focus on smooth transitions and maintaining a balanced stance.
Pop-Up Challenge (30 minutes):
- The Pop-Up Gauntlet: Set up a series of pop-up challenges on the surfboards. These can include popping up from different starting positions (knees, further back on the board), popping up with one arm, or popping up and holding a specific pose for a few seconds.
- Time Trials!: For an added element of fun, incorporate timed pop-up challenges. Students can compete individually or in teams to see who can achieve a successful pop-up in the fastest time.
- Peer Feedback: After each challenge, encourage students to provide constructive feedback to their peers, focusing on strengths and areas for improvement in their pop-up technique.
Balance and Control Showcase (40 minutes):
- Boardwalk Bonanza: This is where creativity takes center stage! Students will use their surfboards (or pool noodles) to create a balance and control showcase. This can be:
- Individual: Students develop a short routine showcasing various balance and control skills on the board, like walking on the board, balancing on one leg, or transitioning from kneeling to standing.
- Group Effort: Students collaborate to create a synchronized routine showcasing group balance and control on the surfboard.
- Performance Time!: Students take turns presenting their individual routines or group performances. Encourage them to use music, props (optional), and costumes (optional) to add flair to their showcase.
Wrap-up and Reflection (10 minutes):
- Celebrating Success: Discuss the importance of pop-up technique, balance, and board control for surfing success. Celebrate the creativity and effort showcased in the balance and control routines.
- Keeping the Stoke Alive: Emphasize the importance of continued practice for mastering pop-up, balance, and control skills. Encourage students to practice on land or in a safe shallow water environment outside of class.
Differentiation:
- Younger students can use pool noodles instead of surfboards for balance and control activities.
- For beginners who are still mastering the pop-up, focus on balance and control challenges while kneeling on the surfboard.
- Advanced students can create more complex balance and control routines in their showcase.
Extension Activities:
- Have students create a visual representation of their ideal pop-up technique using drawings or collages.
- Organize a friendly competition where students create short surf-inspired skits that incorporate pop-up, balance, and control skills.
Remember:
This performance task injects fun and creativity into practicing essential surfing skills. By providing opportunities for challenge, feedback, and self-expression, students gain confidence and a deeper understanding of the importance of pop-up, balance, and board control for riding waves!
