Surfer lesson: Become Ocean Advocates! A Performance Task for Ocean Awareness

This performance task equips Surfer students with the knowledge and skills to become ocean advocates. Through research, creative expression, and action planning, students will raise awareness about critical ocean issues and inspire action for a healthier future for our seas.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify and research major threats to the ocean environment. (Knowledge)
  • Students will be able to analyze the impact of human activities on the ocean. (Critical Thinking)
  • Students as a class will select a specific ocean issue to focus on. (Collaboration)
  • Students will be able to create an engaging presentation or performance piece to raise awareness about the chosen ocean issue. (Creativity & Communication)
  • Students will be able to develop an action plan to promote positive change and advocate for a healthier ocean. (Action & Problem-Solving)

Materials:

  • Whiteboard or projector
  • Markers, pens, or art supplies
  • Access to the internet or library resources
  • Recycled materials (optional, for props or visual aids)

Activity (120 minutes):

Introduction (10 minutes):

  1. Setting the Stage: Begin by discussing the importance of healthy oceans for our planet's well-being and the enjoyment of surfing.
  2. Threats to Paradise: Briefly introduce the concept of ocean threats like pollution, overfishing, and climate change.

Research and Brainstorming (40 minutes):

  1. Dive into Research: Divide students into small groups and assign each group a specific ocean threat to research. (e.g., plastic pollution, coral reef degradation, overfishing)
  2. Unveiling the Impact: Groups research the causes and consequences of their assigned threat, focusing on how it impacts the ocean ecosystem and marine life.
  3. Brainstorming Solutions: Each group brainstorms potential solutions and advocacy approaches for their assigned ocean threat.

Collaboration and Choosing a Focus (20 minutes):

  1. Sharing the Knowledge: Groups present their research findings and brainstorm solutions to the class.
  2. Sufer Class Focus: Through class discussion, students vote and decide on a single, specific ocean issue to focus on as a class for their advocacy project.

Performance and Action Planning (40 minutes):

  1. Showtime! Students work together to create a compelling presentation or performance piece to raise awareness about the chosen ocean issue. This can be a skit, a song, a poster campaign, or an informative presentation with visuals.
  2. Be the Change: Using brainstorming and discussion, the class develops an action plan. This plan outlines specific steps students can take to advocate for change, such as organizing a beach clean-up, creating educational flyers, or contacting local representatives about ocean conservation policies.

Performance and Action (Separate Class Sessions):

  1. Sufer Advocacy Showcase: During a dedicated class session, students present their creative performance piece to raise awareness about the chosen ocean issue.
  2. Taking Action: Students implement their action plan, putting their advocacy efforts into practice during or outside of school time.

Wrap-up and Reflection (10 minutes):

  1. Celebrating Success: Discuss the impact of the performance and action plan, reflecting on the importance of raising awareness and taking action for ocean conservation.
  2. Empowered Advocates: Emphasize how students can continue to be ocean advocates in their daily lives and encourage them to share their knowledge and inspire others.

Differentiation:

  • Younger students can create a simple drawing or short skit about ocean threats.
  • Older students can delve deeper into research, create a multimedia presentation, and develop a more complex action plan that involves engaging with local businesses or environmental organizations.

Extension Activities:

  • Invite a guest speaker from an ocean conservation organization.
  • Organize a field trip to a local beach or aquarium to connect with the marine environment firsthand.
  • Partner with another class to create a collaborative ocean awareness project.

Remember:

This activity empowers Sufer students to use their passion for surfing to become informed and active advocates for a healthy ocean. By raising awareness and taking action, they can make a positive difference for the waves they love to ride.
