This educational activity utilizes a performance task approach to teach basic paddleboarding skills in a scenic and engaging way.
Target Audience: This activity is designed for beginners with no prior paddleboarding experience.
Learning Objectives:
- Students will be able to identify the main parts of a paddleboard and their functions. (Knowledge)
- Students will be able to demonstrate safe and proper mounting, dismounting, and kneeling techniques on a paddleboard in shallow water. (Skills)

Materials:
- Stable paddleboards (one per student or pair)

- Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) for each student

- Pool noodles or buoys to mark a course (optional)
Safety:
- All participants must wear properly fitted PFDs throughout the activity.
- Instructors should be CPR/First-Aid certified and familiar with open water safety protocols.

Lesson Procedure (120 minutes):
Introduction (20 minutes):

- Open water safety discussion: Review open water safety rules, including sun protection, staying hydrated, staying within designated areas, and awareness of boat traffic (if applicable).
- Paddleboard anatomy: On land, identify the different parts of a paddleboard and explain their functions (deck, grip handle, leash attachment point, fin, etc.)
Land Practice (20 minutes):
- Warm-up exercises: Lead some basic stretches and core exercises to prepare participants for paddling.
- Mounting and Dismounting: Demonstrate safe and controlled techniques for mounting and dismounting the paddleboard in shallow water, emphasizing proper positioning and balance. Allow students to practice under instructor supervision.
- Kneeling Techniques: Teach students how to comfortably kneel on the paddleboard while maintaining balance.
Paddle Power (60 minutes):

Wrap-up and Assessment (20 minutes):
- Group discussion: Facilitate a discussion about the learning experience. Ask students to share challenges and successes.
- Assessment: Use a simple checklist or rubric to assess student performance on key skills like proper mounting/dismounting, basic paddling, turning, and teamwork during navigation (if applicable).
- Cool-down: Lead some light cool-down stretches.
Fun Learning Twists:
- Nature Scavenger Hunt: Provide a list of natural objects students can look for while navigating the course.
